New Year’s resolutions: giving people something positive to strive for the entire year.
Resolutions are given a bad reputation because, more often than not, we give up on the goals before we fully develop them. I have several things I want to work on this year, and I have three simple steps to make sure I don’t get discouraged and to make sure I have the ability to accomplish them.
Sometimes the goals we set are too broad, like “I am going to workout more.” Does that mean we are going to go to the gym for the first week of the new year and then call it good because that is further than we made it last year?
I guess if that works for you, congratulations. You made it through the first week of the new year and just happened to finish your New Year’s resolution in a week. We could just call it New Week’s resolution in that case.
Resolutions should be something you can work on for the entire year. You can make a list of things you want to accomplish during the year and then separate that list into groups that are easily accomplished within a week, month and year.
I know it is discouraging when we don’t finish something right away, and it takes some of our resolve away. Make your first goals little things that can be done easily so you are not discouraged right off the bat. Do the small things, such as resolving to go to bed earlier or minimizing the treats. These things aren’t hard to do and can be accomplished on a weekly basis.
The next set of goals are things that are going to take more time. You will have to put effort into getting these things done, and if you don’t, you will fall into a trap. Don’t give up on your resolution just because you don’t see the improvement you want right away. New Year’s resolutions have the word “year” in them for a reason: They are supposed to take all year.
Your last goal can be something you want to work on the entire year. My New Year’s resolution is to go out and try new things this year. It isn’t too difficult to do this, but I will have to work on this during the whole year. This goal is inspired by some of the great friends I have made this year, and I want to be able to show them New Year’s resolutions are not pointless.
New Year’s resolutions may not be something you are into, but you should give them a try. You might find that even doing something month by month will help make your life easier, or just more fun, but it will definitely impact you in a positive way.
