Students, faculty and the general public have a source for free tax help, and it’s right here on campus.
Dixie is providing free income tax preparation starting Feb. 5 through April 11, except during the week of spring break. DSC accounting students, who are IRS certified, will provide the service under supervision of faculty, who are CPAs and IRS certified.
According to the press release provided by Kevin Barrett, DSC professor of accounting, “During the 2012 tax season, DSC students and their advisers provided 4,504 hours of community service assisting 1,808 clients file 1,858 federal and 1,962 state returns to facilitate the return of $3,619,857 in state and federal refunds back to the Dixie community.”
Bill Hughes, a senior accounting major from St. George, said Dixie has embraced the IRS program that offers help to the public.
He said all students should take advantage of this service even if they are not currently working.
“Even if students don’t have a job, they still need to have their taxes looked at,” Hughes said. “If they are getting tuition and Pell grants, then they can get some tax offerings.”
Also, foreign students are required to file a tax return with their status.
Students who get their taxes done are not the only ones profiting from the program.
“It’s experience, so you can get your hands wet,” said Jeff Nelson, a senior accounting major from St. George. “So when you get a job at an accounting firm during tax season, then you can know what you are doing; plus, it’s also required to graduate. We are so glad to be in the program. I can’t wait to get some real hands-on experience.”
The service is held Tuesday through Thursday from 4-8 p.m. in room 127 of the Udvar-Hazy building.
“Tax preparation services are sponsored by the IRS’s volunteer income tax assistance program and the Five-County Association of Governments,” according to the press release. “It is designed to assist low and middle-income individuals of all ages on a wide range of tax-return scenarios.”
