Food giant Cargill announced a voluntary recall Wednesday of roughly 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey. The turkey was produced at the Springville, Ark. plant between Feburary and August. The recall comes after reports of Salmonella infected meats coming from the Springville plant. The company completed a internal investigation before shutting down production at the plant. An ongoing USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) investigation into multiple illnesses from Salmonella Heidelberg did not directly affect the decision to recall the meat and stop production at the plant.
“While facts continue to be gathered, and currently there is no conclusive answer regarding the source of Salmonella Heidelberg contamination, given our concern for what has happened, and our desire to do what is right for our consumers and customers, we are voluntarily removing our ground turkey products from the marketplace,” said Steve Willardsen, president of Cargill’s turkey processing business.
The company owns and operates three other plants across the country and no links to those plants have been found.
