Students, alumni and friends of Dixie State University are invited to celebrate homecoming week with a series of traditions and events.
Highlights will include the Miss Dixie pageant, painting of the “D” and the homecoming parade.
The theme for this year’s homecoming week will be “Paradise City,” inspired by the Guns N’ Roses hit song. Homecoming Week celebrates DSU’s one-of-a-kind setting in southern Utah and allows students and locals to get involved in timeless traditions.
“I am mostly looking forward to the tailgate and football game because it gives me the opportunity to see how many people around me are getting involved,” said Kiley Funk, a freshman undeclared major from Price.
In celebration of DSU’s Homecoming week, the “D” on Black Hill will glow red each evening from Oct. 22-28 to signify activities are under way.
The week will kick off with a Classic Car Show and a free all-American dinner open to the entire community at 6 p.m. at the Alumni House.
“I am looking forward to the True Trailblazer, the Chaos dance,and getting to meet people during a week full of traditions,” said Tragen Jones, a sophomore business major from Salt Lake City.
The crowning of Miss Dixie State which will take place on Tuesday in the M.K. Cox Performing Arts Center starting at 7:30 p.m. The Human Performance Center groundbreaking ceremony and open house will also take place Wednesday on the DSU Diagonal. Later in the evening students are invited to a drive-in movie of “Lilo & Stitch” overlooking St. George at Ridge Top Complex.
The excitement will continue with the original, world-famous Harlem Globetrotters performing in the Burns Arena on Thursday at 7 p.m.
“It is so important to get involved during homecoming week because it allows people to get excited and get involved,” said Kiel Lambson, a sophomore business administration major from Santa Clara. ”Some of my favorite memories come from Homecoming Week.”
The homecoming assembly will take place Friday morning to allow students, faculty and staff to show off their secret and not-so-secret talents.
“Homecoming helps not only the school but the community with the parade which allows people to get involved and show off the Dixie Spirit,” Lambson said.
The week’s festivities will wrap up with the annual Homecoming Parade and Trailblazer tailgate party, all leading up to the football and volleyball game. After the game the Chaos Dance and True Trailblazer will take place to wrap up the tightly-packed week of events.
