Students and alumni will “Rock the Red” at homecoming week this year.
Homecoming kicks off on Monday at 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. outside the Jeffery R. Holland Centennial Commons with food, music and information about all the activities set to take place during homecoming week.
The Miss Dixie Pageant will take place Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cox Auditorium. The pageant will last until 9:30 p.m. as DSU students compete for the title of Miss Dixie.
At the “Rock the Mall” event on Sept. 25 at noon, clubs will compete to sing the school song the loudest and the best. Judges will be there and prizes will be given out to the winners.
“[‘Rock the Mall’] is good for the school because it gets students involved and makes them aware of the different clubs here at [DSU],” said Jeff Gudgell, a sophomore criminal justice major from Hurricane. “[‘Rock the Mall’] really helps get the community get familiar with the clubs that we have at [DSU].”
The homecoming parade will start on the DSU campus and end on Main Street on Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be floats and cars in the parade as well as a football game after the parade.
“The parade is good for students who don’t have much to do,” said Alex McGraw, a freshman engineering major from Franklin, Indiana. “They can come to the parade and be with their families and have fun.”
After the parade concludes at noon, the football game will begin at 6 p.m. and will last until roughly 9 p.m. The football team is playing the Azusa Pacific Tigers at Hansen Stadium.
Immediately following the football game, there will be a homecoming dance at the Cox Pavilion. The dance will begin at 9 p.m. and end at midnight. There will be refreshments, prizes and music.
Alumni of DSU also have activities planned for DSU alumni members. The football reunion will be Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. in the Gardner Student Center, where former DSU football players will reconnect with former teammates. The Alumni Banquet will be going on, starting at 6 p.m. in the old Gym on Sept. 25.
The DSUAA is also hosting the Rebel Midnight 5k — a race with the theme: Run Through the Decades — on Sept. 25 at midnight at the Hansen Stadium. Alumni will gather on University Avenue in front of Hansen Stadium for a tailgate party on Saturday, Sept. 26 starting at 3:45 p.m.
The DSUAA plans activities around homecoming week and make sure that as many alumni as possible are coming back to DSU. There are a total of four events for alumni members to participate in, as well as one activity that is open to anyone.
DSU is celebrating its 104th homecoming this year and students and members of the community are invited to join in on the events that are planned.
