Dixie State women’s tennis got aced by Division I opponents last week.
On the final week of the regular season, DSU stood at 6-7 as a team and needed to some wins to keep its postseason hopes alive. Unfortunately, the Storm would not be able to get those victories.
The Storm headed to Cedar City to face Southern Utah University for the second time this season Thursday. The first contest was no contest, as the Thunderbirds won 1-6.
Ashley Anderson, a sophomore art major from Sandy, was the lone winner for the Storm. Anderson won 6-2, and 7-6 in consecutive sets.
“Ashley was able to control her match all the way though to get the win,” head coach Eric Pelton said. “She played awesome on Friday.”
Senior Sierra Smith joined Anderson to best SUU in a doubles match 6-2, but DSU lost the overall 1-6.
“We play well when we stick to our game,” Anderson said. “We just need to play aggressively and avoid being timid.”
Following the loss to SUU, Dixie went on to close out the season against Weber State University at the Bell Tennis Courts on Saturday.
Dixie State was swept in all the singles matches, falling to the Wildcats 9-0, ending its season with a 6-9 overall record.
“We had a good season,” Pelton said. “We play in probably the toughest conference in Division II, so our record might not have shown it, but I believe it was a successful year.”
Anderson, who is a sophomore and will return next year, said she is optimistic about the program’s future.
“We work really well as a team,” Anderson said. “We had good energy this season and will build on that and come back even stronger next year.”
