Living each day without a plan is like putting a whole bunch of flower, water, eggs, butter, sugar and spices into a mixer without really knowing what we want to make.
In order to succeed in life and really come out on top, we have to develop a game plan of what we are going to do with our lives. It sounds simple, but how often do we go about our daily tasks with no real intent on accomplishing anything of worth? We watch TV, we go to class, we eat, do homework, we watch more TV and we go to bed, just to do the same thing the next day.
Chris Brady, co-author of “Launching a Leadership Revolution,” said, “Do everything with specific intent.” If we students at Dixie State University are to become leaders, we have to learn to become more resolved and goal oriented in our lives.
Before we can really start setting specific short-term and long-term goals, the best thing we can do is resolve within ourselves what our private, public and leadership resolutions are.
Orrin Woodward, author of “Resolved,” wrote about making life resolutions, not New Year’s resolutions, but resolutions on how we will live out our lives. We should become resolved in what we seek to accomplish with our lives. We need a purpose for achieving greatness.
After we have become resolved in our lives, we need to then set goals to achieve our resolutions. A good strategy is using SMART goals, which stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Goals need to be thought out in every aspect if we really want to succeed in accomplishing them.
Once we have goals, we need to live each day striving to achieve them.
In the movie “Hitch,” Will Smith said, “Begin each day as if it were on purpose.” I love that quote because it can set each day off with the right attitude for success.
Brian Tracy wrote a book titled “Eat That Frog,” where he talks about tackling biggest projects first and prioritizing days to be most productive. The fact of the matter is, no one can accomplish everything they need to do, but if we work diligently towards those things that are most important, we will accomplish more in our life.
So those of us going to school can work specifically towards what we seek to major in. We must prioritize our lives to give us the most success and become leaders who get things done.
