Men’s basketball team forces overtime, wins big game

More than 4,000 people in the Burns Arena held their breath as the ball flew through the air and ended with a splash — nothing but net.

Senior forward Louis “Bonesaw” Garrett led the Dixie State University men’s basketball team from a nine-point deficit with 2:27 left in the game to force overtime. Garrett hit the game-tying 3-pointer to beat the regulation buzzer.

Dixie went on a 17-4 run within the five minutes of overtime to win 107-94.

The game had 87 total free throws with the Red Storm shooting 54 of them, making 37.

Junior center Zach Robbins led the team in scoring and rebounds. He scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for another double-double. Robbins also recorded four blocks and two steals to lead the team in each statistic. DSU had four other players in double figures in points.

Senior guard Kimball Payne had nine assists to lead the team, including the assist to Garrett on his game-tying 3-pointer.

Dixie State shot a perfect 4-4 from the field in overtime.

The Red Storm will play again Thursday against University of Hawaii-Hilo. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
