A long battle between Dixie State University’s women’s soccer team and Azusa Pacific University resulted in a 1-0 loss for the Storm Saturday morning.
Dixie couldn’t seem to get the ball off its side of the field the entire first half. A goal from APU slowed the momentum for Dixie. The Storm went into the half not able to make any connections—the score remained at 1-0 for the Cougars.
“I think first half we weren’t really prepared for the level and the competition,” said head coach Kacey Bingham.
A lot of action took place in the second half when DSU was determined to put some points on the board. A few shots on goal were made, but none of them hit the net.
“We really dominated the second half; we just really wish we could have got something on,” said defender Emily Fox, a junior elementary education major from Lehi.
Fox said the Storm had plenty of opportunities, including a few corner kicks, but the women just couldn’t finish the game.
The game ended 1-0 for Azusa Pacific University.
“Second half, we just talked about what changes we needed to make [and] where we feel we should be performing,” Bingham said. “They came out and completely knocked it out of the park and performed excellent.”
She said APU is an extremely aggressive, high pressure team and a good technical team.
The Storm are now preparing to take on Point Loma University next week for their final home game of the season.
Bingham said she is looking forward to that game, and PLU is a very beatable team. She said the women just have to come out with the same drive as they did during the APU game, and she believes they have a big chance to defeat Point Loma.
She said Dixie needs to learn how to start with that same pressure and intensity for this game.
DSU will play PLU Saturday at 9 a.m. at Hansen Stadium.
