Sometimes the previews before the film are just as worthy of watch time as the film itself.
When I see a movie, I’m always early so I absolutely do not miss the previews. If you have ever been in a movie theater with me at the time a trailer starts, you know that I become an entirely different person.
I ignore everything around me, although I may excitedly hit you in the arm a couple of times and make a small squealing noise when the music starts up and movement begins on the big screen. Sometimes even tears are shed. It’s a very emotional experience.
When the filmmaker marketing folks of the universe release previews, they want you to see all the good stuff, and generally some sort of synopsis, packed into a tiny timeline. Fortunately, I’ve watched all the previews for March movies multiple times over, and I am happy to tell you what to see in theaters and what you may want to wait on to get from Redbox.
It is going to be a busy month as far as film releases go. About 20 major films are planned, though not all will be playing in St. George, much to my dismay.
Unfortunately, sometimes all the good stuff gets stuck in the trailer, which could easily be a deal breaker. There are plenty of factors that make the previews worth the watch.
When I watched the preview for “Jack the Giant Slayer,” I felt like I had seen the whole movie in two minutes’ time. The cast and director are what will get to actually go see the movie.
A witty Ewan McGregor with a sweet mustache? I’m there. I’m also excited to see Nicholas Hoult as Jack, having been a loyal fan since his “Skins” days, and I’m glad he’s starting to make a name for himself on this side of the Atlantic.
Even though the story is not a new one, the colorful effects and action are going to keep me entertained. Director Bryan Singer, known for the first two “X-Men” movies, knows how to make good action happen, so I trust him to do his thing.
Don’t get me wrong; there are plenty of movies that make good actors bad. Nothing is certain. For example, James Franco is coming up in a couple of flicks: “Oz: The Great and Powerful” and “Spring Breakers.”
One is a family film, one is not so much. One looks colorfully stunning while the other has Franco playing a gangster in corn rows. If that visual doesn’t burn uncertainty into the brain, then I’m not sure what will.
Others I think will be visually awesome with action are “The Host” and “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”
One can always count on pretty much the entire cast of “G.I. Joe” to be the crazy action stars that they are, but star of “The Host,” Saoirse Ronan, can definitely be added to that category ever since her fantastic action performance in “Hanna” two years ago.
“The Host,” also starring Diane Kruger and Max Irons, centers around a love story, but the battles between different beings and the battle of humanity within oneself make this sci-fi one to watch out for.
“Dead Man Down” is possibly the movie I’m looking forward to most. Its preview is dark in color and in plot. It tells a story of crime and vengeance by the same director and composer as the original Swedish version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” trilogy. Every time I see the preview, I get chills.
As for comedy, I’m most eager for “Admission.” Funny folks Tina Fey and Paul Rudd have yet to fail to bring laughter to my heart.
The somewhat contradictory title of “The Last Exorcism Part II” might be funny enough in itself that I probably won’t take time I will never get back to go see that in theaters.
