Local High School Crowns Homecoming Queen In A Special Way

Desert Hills Thunder opened region football with a bang, electrocuting the Canyon View Falcons Friday 39-2. But the game’s excitement was just a small portion of the joyous events happening for Desert Hills that night.

Madi Sonju, a Desert Hills senior diagnosed with Down’s syndrome, attended the homecoming game with no idea she would be leaving a queen. It’s an honor her older sister also received last year. This year, Madi’s sister, who also has Down’s syndrome, crowned Madi homecoming queen.

“It’s a dream come true for both of them,” Leslye Sonju, the girls’ mother, told SUN News. “The student body of Desert Hills High have been so supportive of my girls.”

“I’m just so happy!” Madi said.
