Scooby-Doo: Netflix is Preparing a New Live-Action Series

The producer of You and the writers of Cowboy Bebop are diving into a new adaptation of the Scooby Gang’s adventures.

The First Scooby-Doo Live-Action Series

Since its inception in 1969 by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the Scooby-Doo franchise has spawned numerous cartoons and animated films, but has never yet been turned into a live-action series.

However, live-action movies did emerge in 2002 and 2004 in theaters, Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, featuring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini.

The new Netflix series is officially described as a “modern reinvention” of the popular animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? (also known as Scoubidou) from Hanna-Barbera Studios:

“During their last summer at camp, Shaggy and Daphne, two old friends, find themselves entangled in a disturbing mystery involving a lone Great Dane puppy, who may have witnessed a supernatural murder,” the official synopsis states. “Along with Velma, a pragmatic city girl with a scientific bent, and Fred, a strange but very attractive newcomer, they set out to solve the case that plunges them all into a terrifying nightmare threatening to expose all their secrets.”

Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (screenwriters of Cowboy Bebop, also on Netflix) are the showrunners of this new Scooby-Doo series. They also serve as executive producers along with André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner from Midnight Radio (Citadel), as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman of Berlanti Productions (You) under their agreement with Warner Bros. Television.

“One of my first and fondest jobs in Hollywood was working with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera as they signed animation cells,” Berlanti stated. “Josh, Scott, and the whole team at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that reflects their incredible spirit and creative genius. We are grateful to them as well as the entire team at Warner and Netflix for their partnership that has allowed us to bring this version of Scooby-Doo to life!”

It’s not yet known when this new Scooby-Doo series will hit Netflix, but in the meantime, you can hop back into the Mystery Machine and follow the Scooby Gang’s adventures on the streaming service Max with the two aforementioned live-action movies as well as the animated film Scooby! (2020).

You can also find the latter on Netflix alongside the 2010 animated series, Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated.
