Netflix is considering a legendary director for the latest film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Cujo.
Though it’s our profession, by early 2025, we’ve lost track of the existing and upcoming adaptations of works by the prolific Stephen King.
Netflix is now developing a new feature-length version of the 1981 novel Cujo, which was previously made into a film in 1983. Recent news reveals that the streaming service is eyeing a prestigious director to take the helm.
The science fiction film suffered a disastrous premiere on the streaming platform.
A Howling Rumor
The director reportedly in talks with Netflix is Darren Aronofsky. While his name might not ring a bell for everyone, he directed the cult classic Requiem for a Dream.
Since then, Aronofsky, who has yet to work on a streaming platform or in pure horror, has directed films like Black Swan, The Wrestler, Mother!, and the Oscar-winning The Whale. His filmography is undoubtedly serious. Before Cujo, his most recent work will appear in Caught Stealing, hitting theaters next August.
As a reminder, both the book and the original film Cujo focus on a Saint Bernard infected with the rabies virus, trapping a woman (played by Dee Wallace in the original movie) and her child in a car.
If confirmed, Darren Aronofsky and Netflix will aim to surpass the 1983 adaptation, which grossed $21 million at the box office at that time.
To support this potential director, the experienced producer Roy Lee is already officially on board. He has notably produced other Stephen King adaptations for the screen, including Salem and It. More to come.
